About the 2nd St. LIFE Project
The 2nd St. L.I.F.E. Project is an applied research project for sustainable and affordable residential design in cold climates well poised to create a significant and interactive educational opportunity and model for design professionals, contractors, code officials and homeowners. As a living laboratory, this project intends to bring useful and desired energy and other data, methods documentation and material sourcing resources to the design and construction community of the Roaring Fork Valley and surrounding regions. The design strives to limit use of high impact materials such as concrete and petroleum based products while creating a super insulated low impact and high performance home. The project employs small footprint passive solar design, shallow frost protected footings, perlite underfloor insulation, straw bale wall system with lightweight post and beam framing, Forest Stewardship Council lumber, heat recovery system, high performance windows with reduced embodied energy fiberglass frames, solar hot water, earthen floor system, earthen and lime plasters, timber frame exterior detailing among other elements.
